The goal of AI in K12 education should be for teachers and students to achieve synergy between technology and human creativity. If that sounds like a daunting task, education consultant ’s FETC 2025 sessions will provide some guidance. One caveat: His talks are heavy on audience participation.

Attendees will be asked to create AI images and songs, and take a stand on hot education topics such as social media and screen time. They will also use AI to perform tasks such as writing a school cellphone policy in the language of Generation Alpha.

“Rizz,†anyone?

Let’s jump back to synergy, which Hooker combines with “transparency†to help educators maximize AI. Here are four ways teachers can take a balanced approach in allowing students to use AI on their projects:

  • AI does the brainstorming for a project, then students do the rest.
  • Students do the brainstorming, and then use AI to create initial prototypes or visuals before revising on their own.
  • Students brainstorm, create the prototypes and use AI to edit or test their work.
  • Students brainstorm, create and edit, and then AI becomes a critical thought partner to help students reflect on their work.

This process should give teachers confidence that students are learning all essential skills as they leverage AI.

Hooker also hopes to help educators spot the biases that are baked into AI. For example, he asked AI to write wedding vows between an IT worker and an educator. Though Hooker did not specify gender, AI made the IT worker male and the educator, female. It also assumed it was not a same-sex marriages.

“AI is a great time saver,†Hooker concludes. “AI is also not perfect. Whatever you do with it, double check before you put it out there.â€
